Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder that affects how one breathes during sleep. In the past years numerous sleep apnea studies have been performed and the results show that more and more people are developing this sleeping disorder. Everyone is different and this means that everyone’s sleep apnea will work and affect them differently. Generally speaking sleep apnea can happen numerous times during the night and when it does happen the person’s breathing will stop. The breathing will resume after a few seconds in most cases. However, the person will usually wake up gasping for air. In the recent sleep apnea studies it was reported that some people will have this happen to them hundreds of time during the night.


Due to the fact that people are waking up numerous times during the night it is safe to sleep that the quality of their sleep is often affected. The sleep apnea studies showed that people who do have moderate to severe sleep apnea will often report being very tired during the name, being more irritable than usual, and having a hard time focusing on daily activities. All of these things can lead to a lesser quality of life. Not to mention the numerous medical consequences that can occur from not being able to get the proper amount of sleep.

One alarming trend that the sleep apnea studies showed was the more than 80 percent of people who suffer from sleep apnea are also overweight. The sleep apnea studies concluded that being overweight is one of the risk factors for sleep apnea. While there are other risk factors for developing this sleeping disorder most medical experts will agree that obesity seems to be the leading cause.

Treatment for Sleep Apnea

Often times the number one treatment for sleep apnea is through the use of breathing machines known as CPAP. These are machines that help to control and regulate one’s breathing. By doing the airways will have a lesser chance of closing. Surgery is also an option but this is not usually done. Your doctor can advise you on the best treatment for sleep apnea.

If someone is overweight and has sleep apnea often the best form of treatment would be weight loss. The sleep apnea studies have shown that people who have sleep apnea and begin a weight loss program have incredible results. Losing weight is good for many medical reasons but these sleep apnea studies seem to indicate that by taking care of one’s weight they may be able to get a better and sounder sleep. Sleep apnea can be treated and controlled but if there is a chance that one can lose weight and not have to deal with sleep apnea anymore sounds like a win win for everyone.
